Handwritten Wines

Handwritten 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Calistoga 750 ml

The Calistoga District is located at the base of Mount St. Helena, an extinct volcano that rises to over 4,000 feet in the Napa Valley’s most northwestern region. Along with being the warmest of all the valley’s growing regions, it is no surprise that Calistoga also boasts the largest amount of volcanic soil. This results in a richer, fuller wine.

Due to the power of the mountain pulling rain from Napa’s winter skies, the Calistoga District also has the highest annual rainfall totals, reaching up to 60 inches a year. Compare that to the Carneros’ 25. Along with deep aquifers, drawing the vine’s roots deep into the stratus of the volcanic soils for more complex flavors, the evenings are cooled by the Pacific winds coming through the Chalk Hill Gap.

This volcanic terroir creates a wine deep purple in color, with smoky, cured meats, parmesan, with jammy and dried fruits from the first sip. This heavy bodied and rustic wine then continues on to deliver fennel seed, coriander, morel mushrooms, vanilla and bitter Valhrona chocolate on the palate.

With its weight and chewy tannins, decanting for an hour or cellaring for several years can help this mountain inspired beauty show its true glory.
